Our ethos set out by Rabbi Chaim Kanterovitz : Dear Friend, Yeshurun is a vibrant exciting community with continuous activity and action. Whether one is seeking to expand their mind, extend Torah knowledge or simply engage in social activity every one can find their very own niche in which they can feel at home. We are a Modern Orthodox Community with a religious Zionist outlook. These are big words so what do they exactly mean? Firstly our community endeavours to provide a meaningful religious experience to every Jew, no matter what their background or level of commitment. Of course all this is always within the context of Halachah. Within our Community there are many different types of Jews: observant shomrei Shabbat families, less observant families who are traditional, and so on. The important thing here is that everyone feels comfortable in our shul; every one has found fulfilment and enjoys a positive experience. There are people from every walk of life, men and women who engage with the wider world on a daily basis. Modern Orthodoxy can be our description because it is an integration of the best of the secular world as a means of enhancing our Jewish expression. We seek to address contemporary reality, to make it possible for Jews living in western society to affirm their Jewishness shamelessly and uncompromisingly and to project Judaism as a light unto the nations. Our Judaism follows the model of Deracheiha Darchei Noam – the ways of the Torah are ways of pleasantness. Furthermore we are aware of the principle: Ethalech lifnei Hashem bearzot Hachaim- the way of Torah is manifest in what is happening in the world outside. According to our sages this is a gauge of how Torah is appreciated. Are people saying “this is the Judaism I want to emulate”? This is the life of splendour Tifferet? To us the State of Israel is not just another holiday resort which we visit from time to time. We view the State of Israel as the rightful home land of the Jewish people: the beginning of the Messianic process as prophesised in the Bible of the return of the Jewish people to their home and roots. We do not all agree all the time or even some of the time, with Israeli government policies, but we do believe that the State of Israel plays a vital role in our Jewish identity. There is very strong empathy and support for Israel and keen interest in its day to day news. Here at Yeshurun we strive to fuse both worlds whilst remaining committed in every way to authenticate and promote Halachah. We look forward to welcoming new members for a chat or discussion.
